Filecoin’s Small Step and Big Step

Three years of hard work are finally coming to fruition as the Filecoin mainnet is officially launched with a significant investment of funds, equipment, manpower, and high hopes. This ambitious decentralized project will now undergo real-world testing to mark a new era in its development.

Earlier this year, Juan, the founder of IPFS, disclosed his hope to motivate everyone to help Filecoin achieve the 1ZB storage goal. To put this number into perspective, 1ZB is equivalent to 1024×1024×1024×1024GB. For context, with a global population of 7 billion, 1ZB equals around 157GB per person – about 32,168 digital photos per person, or a 7-hour long 4k/30fps HD video per person. As the world embraces the rapid growth of information technology such as big data, cloud computing, AI, and IoT, data volumes are increasing exponentially. According to IDC research, the global data volume in 2020 reached 44ZB, with China accounting for approximately 18% of this total – about 8060EB. Thus, achieving a 1ZB storage in the already launched Filecoin distributed storage marketplace is a significant milestone.

Empowering the Real Economy

With the advent of the 5G, IoT, and big data era, a massive, secure, and reliable infrastructure is needed to accommodate the entire human data information. Traditional internet storage methods can no longer meet such enormous storage demands. Filecoin, as a decentralized storage infrastructure and application based on blockchain technology, is more secure, open, and affordable than traditional centralized cloud storage. It solves issues relating to data ownership and privacy, thus empowering traditional personal and enterprise data storage and ultimately contributing to the real economy.

Even before the mainnet’s launch, the Filecoin ecosystem had been rapidly advancing, with activities such as the official Hackathon and the Filecoin Frontier Accelerator designed to propel the development of ecological projects. The recent Space Race second phase also saw the emergence of high-quality applications like Starry Sky in Yunnan (a repository of astronomical and meteorological data) and Smartcity (a sensor network and data analysis system), which are contributing to the implementation of Filecoin empowered applications.

As the Filecoin ecosystem grows increasingly sophisticated, empowering real enterprises is the ultimate goal. It is at this point that Filecoin may realize its maximum potential value.
